(Available August 11, 2009) Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2008 Cannes
film festival and France’s
Academy Award nominee for best foreign film, Entre les murs introduces us to François Marin, a teacher in a
racially mixed inner city middle school in Paris.Marin and the other teachers collectively want to inspire their
students, but each teacher is an individual with different ideas on how to
achieve results. The administration of the school tries to be as fair as
possible, which includes having student representatives sit on the student
evaluation committee. Marin tries to get through to his students, sometimes
with success and sometimes resulting in utter failure. There is no better film
at getting at the inner workings of a middle school in today’s world.2008, 128 minutes, PG-13, in French with
English subtitles.
